Hans Klopper is a highly experienced South African restructuring and insolvency specialist with several decades of practice at the forefront of corporate recovery. As former Head of BDO Business Restructuring, he played a leading role in shaping business rescue practice following the implementation of Chapter 6 of the Companies Act, 2008 in May 2011. He has extensive expertise in business rescue, corporate liquidations, and the administration of insolvent and deceased estates.

Hans is recognised as a thought leader in the field, having presented at numerous workshops, lectures, and international conferences. His work has also been published in legal literature, including the Stellenbosch Law Review (2014), where he examined the effectiveness of section 155 compromises in avoiding liquidation.

He was a founding member of AIPSA (now SARIPA) in 1986, qualified as an attorney in 1990, and was appointed as a director at Hofmeyr Inc. (now Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr) the same year. In 1996, he established Hans Klopper Inc., a specialist insolvency practice that later evolved into BDO Business Restructuring.

Hans began his career in the 1980s in the Insolvency Department of Syfrets Trust (Pretoria), where he was involved in major matters including the liquidation of Triomf Fertilizer Richards Bay (Pty) Ltd and the AA Mutual Life Assurance Company.

In 1999, he was appointed as the first curator of medical schemes under the Medical Schemes Act, overseeing the KwaZulu-Natal and Regional Medical Schemes and successfully restoring both to solvency before returning them to their trustees. During this period, he also acted as receiver for creditors of IGI Insurance Company Ltd.

In 2002, Hans was appointed joint liquidator of Consolidated News Agencies (CNA), one of South Africa’s most significant and complex liquidations, and played a key role in its successful restructuring and sale to Edcon.

Since 2011, he has been appointed as business rescue practitioner in 128 matters, with more than 110 successfully concluded—among the highest number of completed business rescue cases in South Africa.
